Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan are creating a joint trade alliance to develop the North-South transport corridor

    February.28.2024

Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, Serik Zhumangarin, said that this joint venture, which is planned to be established by railway agencies of Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation and Turkmenistan, will help to improve the quality of services, reduce the time of cargo transportation and provide service on the North-South transport corridor under the "one window" initiative.

He said this at a meeting in Mangystau on the development of international transport corridors, such as the North-South corridor and the Trans-Caspian international highway.

As reported by Deputy Minister of Transport Maksat Kaliakparov, the amount of cargo transported by rail in the North-South corridor at the end of 2023 was 2.1 million tons, which is 4% more than the previous year. The Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan announced that by 2027, the transport capacity of the corridor will increase from 6 million to 10 million tons per year.

The Trans-Caspian International Highway is a serious alternative route to East-West routes. Its capacity is 6 million tons, and the volume of cargo in 2023 was equal to 2.76 million tons, which is 65% higher than in 2022. At the end of the first month of 2024, the cargo volume was 274.2 thousand tons, which increased by 147% compared to last year. The Trans-Khazar International Road is carrying out large-scale works to improve infrastructure and terminal facilities, expand ports, increase stocks, remove administrative barriers and create favorable conditions for transporters. All this will allow to increase the carrying capacity of the Trans-Caspian international highway to 10 million tons per year by 2027.
