    May.30.2024

The foundation of the Astanababa architectural complex, located 10-12 km away from the city of Atamyrat, within the Atamyrat etrap of Lebap Velayat, was established in the 12th century. It is oldest building, the mosque, was built during the prosperity of the Turkmen-Oghuz state, which was founded under the leadership of the Great Seljuks.

The complex consists of an open corridor, a square, a portal, a closed corridor, a four-pillared hall, a mosque, a synagogue, the tombs of Zeydali and Zubaydali, a covered passage and the Gyzlarbibi cemetery. Gyzlarbibi cemetery is the later part of the complex. It was built of bricks of different sizes, probably used for the first time.

Memory has been studied for decades. In 1931, archeologist A.A. Marushenko suggested that the Astanababa architectural complex was the Friday Mosque of the IX-X centuries of Zemm. In 1948, scientific research work was carried out here by GTATE under the leadership of M. Y. Masson, the architect and art researcher G. A. Pugachenkova, who worked in its structure, thoroughly studied the monument and at the same time carried out architectural measurements. Based on the collected information, it was concluded that this monument is a unique and beautiful architectural complex, which is made up of separate buildings built in different periods.

This historical and cultural monument, which has a great place in the history of architecture of Turkmenistan, has been under going strengthening and beautification works for many years. These activities gained greater momentum starting from the years of independence of Turkmenistan.

The area around the monument was cleared of weeds and cinders, and the broken half-bricks were put together. Ceramic finds were selected from among them. The interior of the monument was carefully studied, marks were placed on the walls to determine whether the cracks were growing or remaining in the same position, and after a certain period of time it was found that there were no harmful changes.

The Region government gave a great help in closing the border of the protection zone of the monuments with an iron mesh wall. In the spring of 1999, the foundation of the Gyzlarbibi cemetery of the Astanababa architectural complex was partially dismantled, re-sanded, and repaired with square bricks.
